These figures were found from this source: http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?section code=1&storycode=45844&c=1

These figures suggest that Kerrang increased its average per-issue circulation by 1.8 per cent to 44,013. Along with them, RWD who also followed behind with an average per-issue circulation of 1.7% per cent to 78,867. This suggests that there is still a market present for magazines as people are still purchasing magazines. However, Classic Rock stayed the same; no loss or profit gained.

The remaining magazines had increased the level of losses which varies from -3.2% to -17.3%. Over time technology is changing as this may be the effect of smaller number of purchases as magazines are able to be viewed on the Internet. Also the magazine figures that I have presented are not from my music genre but they still suggest people are not appealed my magazines. Another effect could be the pricing of the magazine, as it may not give the reader as much information as the price tag. Target market are more alert on were they spend their money as recession has left a huge effect on people's luxury items. The pricing tag of the magazine may only meet the higher wage earners pockets than the low income ones. These effects will help me when producing my magazine because it is important for me to prevent these risks and attract everyone in my target market.

My music genre has not previously had a magazine based upon it in the UK saw I have decided to take a look at women interest magazine's as my magazine is focused mainly on women.

These figures were found on this source: http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&storycode=45841&c=1

These figures show a mixture of losses and profit's made by well establish women's magazines, but they losses vary from -1.3% to -9.0%. This includes Cosmopolitan which made the highest losses at -9.0% as the drop of 40,000 copies per issue resulted a fall from second place to sixth place in the sector. Company magazine followed through with -5.3% losses and the smallest number of losses was made by Yours magazine. This suggest that the numbers are decreasing not only on the music magazines but the specialised in women's are to. However the figures are not as bad as the music one's. As there is alot more competition in the market, producing the unique different magazine that is attractable from all of the rest. As well as backed with information the readers are wanting to hear.
Looking at the market the other magazines like Social & Personal were doing extremely well as they profits has risen to 27.7%. These figures balance the market and suggest there is still market present to purchase magazines. The only way to be successful is to produce what the reader is looking for.

Things that I can use to improve my magazine:
  • Keeping updated thorough market research on what the readers like and dislike.
  • Improving the magazine and taking on constructive criticism
  • Make the font cover amazing as that's the main give away as it should crab the readers attention
  • Keep the content page clear but full of information to intrigue the reader to read further
  • Double page article should be well presented with no grammar mistakes and user friendly
  • Allow people to look at the magazine on the internet as it is easier to access, translatable along with more informatic.
  • Also my magazine price purchase will be at a reasonable standard so the target market would be able to purchase it in all classes. The highest losses come from magazine's that have high rates for the magazine.
  • The magazine will be a weekly release keeping people updated.

  1. A good post, Ashba - may be worth seeing if the biggest losses were those with the highest prices and see if this suggests a strategy you could use to minimise risk of failure?
